The Skilled – Nominated or Sponsored (Provisional) (subclass 489) visa is a provisional visa that allows nominated skilled workers to work and live in regional Queensland for four years, and is a pathway to permanent residency.

You can apply for this visa through the Australian Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) using SkillSelect.

The subclass 489 visa has two streams to suit the needs of employers in regional Queensland:

Queensland Skilled Occupation List for skilled migrants outside of regional Queensland

Queensland Skilled Occupation List for applicants currently working in regional Queensland (subclass 489)

Postcodes that are considered regional can be found on the Department of Immigration and Border Protection’s (DIBP) website. As a general guide, locations outside of South East Queensland are considered regional.

ELIGIBLE OCCUPATIONS

To be eligible for this visa, you must have an occupation on one of the lists and meet Queensland’s eligibility criteria for that QSOL.

Criteria

If you are seeking Queensland state nomination under the 489 visa subclass, you must:

In addition, you are requirement to meet the following depending on the stream you are applying for:

Skilled migrants outside regional Queensland

If you are currently residing, working or studying in another state or territory of Australia, you need to provide evidence you have accepted a job in Queensland.

Skilled migrants currently working in regional Queensland

  • have an occupation on the Queensland Skilled Occupation List for migrants currently working in regional Queensland
  • be working in regional Queensland in your nominated or closely related occupation for the previous six months at time of lodging your Expression of Interest; and
  • have an offer to continue your employment and the same employer for 12 months in regional in regional Queensland in your nominated or closely related occupation.

A closely related occupation is defined by Australian Skills Recognition Information (ASRI).

To Apply

  1. Review the eligibility criteria and visa conditions on the DIBP website.
  2. Review the Queensland eligibility criteria to see if you meet the requirements.
  3. Lodge an Expression of Interest through DIBP’s SkillSelect online service. Priority is given to applicants who select ‘Queensland’ in SkillSelect as their nominating state.
  4. If you meet Queensland’s eligibility criteria, Business and Skilled Migration Queensland will contact you with instructions on how to provide additional information  to finalise your application.  A non-refundable application fee must be paid prior to finalising your application.
  5. If you are nominated by Business and Skilled Migration Queensland, you will receive an invitation from DIBP asking you to lodge an application within 60 days of nomination.

TIMEFRAME FOR NOMINATION

Two weeks once Business and Skilled Migration Queensland has received your application and supporting documents.
